Wadhwani Initiative for Sustainable Healthcare (WISH)

1. POSITION VACANT: Communications Officer (CO), WISH, New Delhi

2. BACKGROUND: 

The multitude of health problems and poor health indicators notwithstanding, India currently has an extremely vibrant healthcare ecosystem. Hundreds of activists, entrepreneurs and institutions are running programmes and experimenting with processes to improve health outcomes on the ground. The Wadhwani Initiative for Sustainable Healthcare* (WISH), is a not-for-profit initiative to strengthen and support these people and institutions, across the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors. It will strive to streamline the evolving healthcare innovation eco-system, so that it can reduce inefficiencies, channelize the growing momentum in the sector and ensure it works in tandem with government policy. It is being championed by Mr Sunil Wadhwani, Chairman and Co-Founder, iGate Corporation (a leading IT services MNC).

WISH shall foster a healthcare innovation dialogue among stakeholders, support high-impact scalable organizations, mobilize resources of key stakeholders, involve end users in the innovation process and build evidence on interventions that improve the health outcomes of the rural and urban poor in India. It will provide a unique platform that will leverage the best of the for-profit and not-for-profit sectors to identify, support and strengthen healthcare solutions for the BOP (bottom of the pyramid) population. 

Primary services provided under the WISH initiative shall include ecosystem building through workshops, conferences, innovation labs etc; blended capital financing and a shared services platform for entrepreneurs to access legal, technical and support expertise. WISH shall carry out rigorous, evidence-based technical evaluation and research and share the results through an interactive Knowledge Hub.

3. JOB DESCRIPTION/ RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Communications Officer (CO) shall report to the Resource Mobilization Specialist and be responsible for developing and deploying WISH’s communication strategy, both internally and externally. This shall be done using various print/ digital media to increase WISH’s visibility and potential to influence donors, government, civil society and other stakeholders. 

Key Responsibilities:

(A) Internal and External Communications

(1) Developing and implementing a communications policy for the organization;
(2) Working with different stakeholders (government departments/ projects/ organizations) for identifying activities/ stories/ events/ issues that best highlight WISH’s programmatic work and bring it into focus in the local, regional, national and international media;
(3) Producing high-quality communication materials for both print and audiovisual media and posting it on the WISH website;
(4) Working closely with the creative, advertising and communication agencies for developing high quality communication material, including conceptualization, messaging, localization of content, translations, artworks, tools, etc. for supporting mass media, mid-media and interpersonal communications;
(5) Providing inputs for the communication component of training modules for staff at various levels, including interpersonal communication for field level workers;
(6) Responsible for all publications, produced for both WISH staff and outsiders;
(7) Identifying critical areas and issues for write-up and submission to journals;
(8) Developing and maintaining relationships with a broad range of constituencies, including the media, state and national government counterparts, national forums, as well as donor counterparts, for consistently messaging around program achievements and results;
(9) Participating in the strategic development of the IEC portfolio;
(10) Identifying innovative ways for partnering with media outlets, private sector and other key stakeholders;
(11) Identifying communications gaps and providing on-site media training, resources and skills for building long-term communications capacity of the units/ projects/ partners;
(12) Providing media training and advice to key teams and spokespersons.

(B) Building an Online Presence

(1) Overseeing the on-going strategic development of WISH’s online and digital impact, ensuring the use of digital media tools for communicating and engaging the public and key stakeholders/ partners in WISH’s strategic objectives, activities and achievements;
(2) Overseeing the content of WISH’s website, keeping it relevant and updated.

(C) Integrating Communications with Fundraising and Strategic Relationship Management

(1) Maintaining strategic partnerships and liasisoning with all partners and donors;
(2) Assisting the Resource Mobilization Specialist in the development of fund raising materials.

(D) Other

(1) Managing the approved budget for delivering agreed communications strategies;
(2) Building a network of freelance contributors to deliver specific communications projects on need basis;
(3) Carrying out any other responsibilities assigned by the CEO.

4. QUALIFICATION, EXPERIENCE AND COMPETENCIES:

Qualification:

Minimum a Post Graduate Degree/ Diploma in Media/ Journalism/ Public Relations/ Development Studies/ Social Work, or any other related field from a reputed institute.

Experience:

(1) Minimum five years of demonstrable experience in the area of communications, with at least two years experience in the development sector; 
(2) Direct experience of working with the mass media (news, entertainment or advertising);
(3) Demonstrable experience of working with the Government of India and bilateral and multilateral donor agencies;
(4) Previous exposure to and understanding of audience research and the integration of research findings into creative outputs, is desirable;
(5) Knowledge of public health issues globally and particularly, in India, is desirable.

Skills:

(1) Demonstrable skills in program communication, development of IEC material, documentation and publication (including web-based documentation);
(2) An understanding of international development procedures and practices and commitment to international development objectives, preferably interfaced with media, is desirable; 
(3) Demonstrable negotiating and diplomatic skills, with experience of maintaining effective partnerships;
(4) A team player and confident communicator, with excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to conduct business at all levels within his/her team and organization, as well as externally, from the grassroots upwards;
(5) Excellent writing, editing and overall communication skills in English and Hindi;
(6) High degree of competency in Windows-based computer programs is important;
(7) Willingness to travel and document project work.

5. COMPENSATION OFFERED:

Gross annual remuneration budgeted for the position ranges from Rs. 7 – 10 lacs per annum, with flexibility for improvement in case of exceptional talent. Offers shall be commensurate with the qualifications, experience and salary history, of the selected candidate.

6. CONTRACTUAL EMPLOYMENT: The successful candidate shall be offered an annual contract, extendable based on performance.
